Graham Honors Bill & Hillary Clinton During Final Crusade!

On the second night of his New York crusade, evangelist Billy Graham got a little help from two friends - Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The ex-President and New York's junior senator joined the crowd of 80,000 at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, and were greeted like soul mates.

The audience screamed as Bill Clinton took Graham's hand and spoke about previous revivals.

"Hillary and I are honored to be here tonight ... 46-plus years after I attended my first Billy Graham crusade," Clinton said.......

He said Graham won his heart decades ago when he refused to speak to a segregated audience........

Graham returned the favor, lavishing the Democratic power duo with praise.

"They're a great couple," he said. "I told an audience that I felt when he left the presidency he should be an evangelist because he has all the gifts and he'd leave his wife to run the country."

What a sorry spectacle!

The man considered by many the greatest evangelist of our age continues his life long habit of sucking up to the rich and powerful of this world. Graham touts the fact that he has been an advisor to presidents from Truman to G.W. Bush but is that really something to boast about? Did Paul go to Rome to be an advisor to the Emperor? Was John the Baptist a confidante of King Herod? Graham would do well to heed the words of James

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:4

And don’t think for a moment that the Clintons won’t use this to their political advantage. Hillary will be seeking the presidency in 2008 but she needs to remake her image in the eyes of the electorate from that of a radical leftist to a sensible moderate. She has begun her transmogrification by recently paying lip service to pro life issues, claiming that she is a “praying person” and ending her speeches with the now obligatory phrase “God bless you and God bless America”. A quasi endorsement from an evangelical leader like Graham will go a long way toward solidifying her new “in touch with America” image.

The fact is this whole crusade seems more like the farewell tour of some rock star than it does a true evangelistic endeavor. Graham has become little more than a Christian super star celebrity. I suspect that very few in attendance were there to hear the message for the first time. Most were regular church goers there to see pay homage to the idol of American evangelicalism.

And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Luke 16:15

Lest you think I’m being unfair, I’ll add this hopeful ending. Several years ago in an interview with Tony Snow, Graham expressed doubts about his own Salvation.

SNOW 'When you get to Heaven, who's going to speak first, you or God?'

GRAHAM 'When I get there, I'm sure that Jesus is going to say that he will welcome me. But I think that he's going to say: 'Well done, our good and faithful servant.' Or he may say: 'You're in the wrong place'."

SNOW: "You really worry that you may be told you're in the wrong place?

GRAHAM: Yes, because I have not - I'm not a righteous man. People put me up on a pedestal that I don't belong in my personal life. And they think that I'm better than I am. I'm not the good man that people think I am. Newspapers and magazines and television have made me out to be a saint. I'm not. I'm not a Mother Teresa. And I feel that very much."

But in a recent AP article Graham seems to have had a conversion experience.

He recalled a night four years ago while he was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., having a brain shunt implanted.

"I thought I was dying. The doctor wasn't sure whether I was or not, but late at night I knew that that was the end. At least I thought it was. And I prayed and all of a sudden all my sins throughout my life came into my mind. And I asked the Lord to forgive me and I had the greatest peace that I've ever had, and that peace has never left me, because I put it all in the name of Christ."

Does it shock you to think that a man like Graham may have preached for years without actually being saved himself? Well it shouldn’t. America’s pulpits are full of unsaved men. Like actors playing a role they show up on Sunday and speak their lines with great skill and emotion. But its God’s word that brings faith. It is the Holy Spirit that brings conviction. And salvation comes not by the will of men but by the will of God.

….Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Zech 4:6
